April 2011: one week of food supply

Last month we discussed the importance of having at least one week of supplies for when you must shelter at home and travel is difficult or prohibited. Ideally each family would have three months of supplies as requested by our Prophet, President Monson. But let's start with one week as an absolute minimum that NO ONE should be without.

Finding the right food to stock for emergencies is not easy. Many today lack cooking experience and rely on ready-to-serve meals that require a microwave or stove. So we have prepared a list easy to serve foods that don't require cooking and store well.

Ward Bulletin Message for April

Can you feed your family for one week with supplies on-hand and no power or gas? With a stockpile of crackers you can make mini-sandwiches with canned tuna, canned chicken, peanut butter and jelly, etc. Canned fruit is ready-to-eat and canned vegetables are edible uncooked. Jerky, trail mix, boxed cereals, juice boxes, and candy provide some variety.

Ward Emergency Plan

Our goal for the first quarter was to update the Communication section of each Ward plan. Please send your update to us.

Our new goal for the second quarter is to update the Skills and Supplies section of your plan. Who is bilingual? Who has a chain saw, four-wheel drive, medical training, etc? Who can patch a hole in a roof or wall?

You may want to pass out a survey or just ask at Priesthood and Relief Society for updates. Interview new Ward members to keep the list up-to-date.

Here's a list of equipment to consider. Please let us know of others.
