2011 October Message

The preparedness theme for October is "Things NOT to do". After a disaster like recent flooding or prolonged power outages there are things you might do that could lead to further property loss, illness, or injury. And as a bonus for the 5th Sunday we offer Halloween Safety tips.
Oct 2.
Beware of scammers after a disaster. Unsolicited contractors that knock on your door after a disaster may take your money, do a terrible job, and never be seen again. Don't open the door to an insurance adjuster or inspector without an ID badge. Thieves use this ruse to gain entry to homes after disasters. Rely instead on home teachers and companies you trust.

After a disaster insurers may offer quick cash up front but require that you sign away all future claims. Don’t assume the insurer is giving you their best offer. Read your policy carefully to see what you are entitled to. If you think the insurer is acting unfairly, contact your state insurance department. Don’t miss deadlines for filing claims.

After a severe storm or flood it can be just as important to know what NOT to do. Don't travel if possible. Roads may be unsafe. Never drive or walk through moving flood waters - the current is stronger than you think! Don't drive through water of unknown depth - many cars become stranded this way. Don't let children play in flood water - it may be contaminated.

More disaster don'ts. After a flood, don't use tap water until it is announced safe. Boiling kills bacteria but won’t remove sewage or toxic chemicals picked up by flood waters. Don't eat food in boxes that were touched by floodwater. - throw them away. Cans that became wet must be washed or sterilized before opening. Don’t turn on water-damaged appliances before having them  inspected.

Halloween Safety Tips: Add reflective tape to a costume or candy bag so motorists can see your child. A flashlight or glow stick is also a good idea. Don’t allow short-cuts through dark alleys, parking lots, or other areas out of sight. Never enter a house to get candy. Kids should not sample the candy until an adult has inspected it.
