The Preparedness topic for July is Protecting Your Important Papers.
In the U.S, fire departments respond to a house/apartment fire every 20 seconds. In just minutes a house can become a raging inferno. Fortunately your family is safe because you've held a fire drill as suggested earlier this year. But what about your house deed, your birth certificates, car titles, and other important documents? Are these lost forever?
Be prepared by making copies of all legal titles, contracts and certificates. You could:
* Use a copy machine and keep the duplicates in a secure place at your office.
* Mail copies to a trusted family member.
* Store copies in a safe deposit box
* Scan your documents and store electronic copies on DVDs or thumb drives outside the house, or stored online in a secure place.
* Scanned documents should be password protected to protect your privacy in case of theft or computer hacking.
