July 2011 - Home Maintenance

Aas the month of June draws to a close we ask each Ward to update the Skills and Equipment Inventory for their Ward Emergency Plan. Please send a copy of your skills & equipment list to Ron Nelson of the High Council and to myself so we can assemble a Stake inventory before Hurricane season. Thank you for your support.

Please update your Ward calling list with Call-Em-All so new members can be reached in case of emergency. Instructions can be found here, http://yorktownStakeEPS.blogspot.com/p/how-to-edit-phone-lists.html.

Our Preparedness theme for July will be, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". In particular we are focusing on home maintenance tasks where a little elbow grease can save lots of money versus repair bills.

One Goal of Preparedness is doing simple steps now to prevent problems in the future. An excellent example of this is home maintenance tasks. Re-caulking the tiles in a bath seems so pointless, that is until you find water leaking into your basement after every shower. House paint and desk stain don't just look pretty, they preserve and protect the wood underneath. See your Ward EPS for more ideas on maintaining your
home.

Some home maintenance tasks can save you more than money; they can save your life. Replace batteries on smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors twice a year. Some families test them monthly to make sure
they work. Clean lint from your dryer's exhaust vent yat least yearly - lint is a fire hazard. Have your furnace inspected yearly and your chimney also if used frequently. These can be carbon monoxide hazards.

With energy prices reaching ever new highs, home maintenance can save money on your winter heating bill. Apply weather stripping around door frames to the outside. Apply caulk to windows to fill any leaks where
cold slips through. Replace the filter on your furnace as reccommended. Have the furnace inspected and adjusted for peak efficiency. Install a programmable thermostat to lower the temperature at night.

July 24 message:
You may not know it, but you may be sharing your home with unwanted guests. Inspect your crawl spaces and attic in the spring to discover if rodents or other wild animals sheltered there over winter. Block
any entry holes they made. Sawdust can indicate termites or carpenter ants. Mice signs include droppings and food packages that have nibbled upon. It's important to catch infestations early before serious harm
is done to your home.

July 31 message:
"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven" - Eccl 3:1. It is important to get into the habit of doing seasonal home maintenance. Establish a routine for yourself, and you will find the work is easy to accomplish and not very time-consuming. A regular schedule of seasonal maintenance can put a stop to the most common — and costly — problems, before they occur.
