August 2011: Hurricane Evacuation

For the August Emergency Preparedness message we'll remind members of
the points made July 31 in the Hurricane lesson.

Did you do the things recommended at the Hurricane Preparedness presentation?
1. Make a Plan.  2. Build a Kit.  3. Be Informed?
Share your family plan with your Home Teacher and Visiting Teacher.
Does your Ward Membership Clerk have a cell phone number and email for
your family?

Evacuation Planning - Find a friend or relative that you can stay with
during a mandatory evacuation. When leaving a flood zone pick someone
nearby but on higher ground. For a category 5 hurricane pick someone
several hundred miles out of the hurricane path. Have their phone
numbers and addresses in your cell/smart phone and GPS.

There are many websites to help you customize family go-kits. Here are three:

www.fema.gov/areyouready/assemble_disaster_supplies_kit.shtm
www.co.colfax.nm.us/download/fire/PREPARING%20A%2072%20HOUR.pdf

No Evacuation Plan is final until it's tested. For Family Home Evening
load the kids, and pets, and go-kits into the car and drive somewhere
for a picnic using your supplies. Was there space for everyone and
everything? What would you leave out next time? What would you add?
Did you remember food and water for your pets?
